Dude…I’m not Drunk

Acts 2:14-17 (ESV) But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: 17 “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh…

Have you asked yourself, how these folk were acting if the people around them thought they were drunk? Were they happy drunks, mad drunks, aggressive drunks…what? I’ve been around drunk people, in fact, back in the day I was one and there are some I liked (life of the party people) and others, well, let’s say I avoided. The upper room folk must have been a tad noisy and because it was early, folk would have naturally thought they had been up all night partying. But what happened was not an oversaturation of alcohol but of the Spirit, for the Holy Spirit fell upon them, turning them from being a scared and let’s stay hidden lot, to a joyful, loud and Spirit-saturated crew. After all, this is what an unleashed life is supposed to look like – saturated by the Spirit’s presence. Personally, I could use a fresh drink of that and I pray for a fresh desire to stay close to the Holy Spirit’s tap.
