2 Timothy 1:6-7 (ESV) For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
Most of the time when we think about this portion of scripture, we only think about v7, to the neglect of v6, but v6 only becomes real to us when we include in v7. Here’s why. The gifts we’ve been given are supernatural in nature. They carry with them great power and as spidey’s grandma said, “with great power comes great responsibility”. The trouble comes when we, out of fear, keep them locked up within us, rather than release them for the betterment of those around us. Fear says things like, “what if they don’t work?” “What if people think you’re crazy or a religious nut?” What if you embarrass God?”. See what fear can do? It can stymie the gifts God gave you. What then are we to do? As verse 6 says, “Fan them into flame”. We do this in numerous ways. By praying in the spirit; by staying prayerfully connected to God; by keeping our nose in the Word; by walking out the scriptures to the best of our abilities…by being a doer of the Word and not a hearer only, etc. Friends, you have been Unleashed to release these gifts upon a lost and dying world, let’s then not allow fear to rob us of that divine right.
