Day 7 – Tongues, Interpretations & Spirits…

1 Corinthians 12:10 (NKJV)
To another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

Different kinds of Tongues –  is a supernatural utterance in an unknown tongue

Interpretation of tongues –  is the interpretation of what was said in an unknown tongue – specifically regarding the spiritual gift of diversity of tongues.

The gift of different kinds of tongues is not to be confused with the spirit-filled believer’s ability to speak in tongues – those are two different and distinct manifestations. One is mainly for our own private use, while the other is mainly for public use.

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit as found in Acts 2:1-4 and the subsequent speaking in tongues was a sign to the believer and the unbeliever that the spirit of God had come, that the fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy had come true. One of the main purposes of tongues in our personal lives is to enhance our prayer life.

The Spiritual gift of different kinds of tongues along with the spiritual gift of interpretation of tongues is mainly given for public use. The tongues we read about at Pentecost comes with the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and is personal in nature. The gift of different kinds of tongues flows as the Spirit wills: your prayer language of tongues, operates as you will.

Discerning of Spirits – is a divine revelation into the realm of the Spirit world – Be it with Godly things or ungodly things. It’s the Holy Spirit giving you supernatural insight into the Spirit world. To discern means to perceive by seeing or hearing.

The discerning of Spirits functions for 3 purposes:

To discern manifestations of the Holy Spirit.

This is the divine ability to know if a person is truly functioning through the Holy spirit of not. You can know through the function of this gift if they are phoney or real.

To discern motives of the human heart or the spirit by which people do things.

Remember the story of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5:3. Well, Peter discerned their motives – it was greed and deception.

To discern the presence of an evil spirit.

Lastly, you need to know that discerning of spirits is not a gift to uncover human failures. It is not a discerning of peoples character faults – it is not a discerning of people but of spirits.

Pretty cool to say the least! And these are Gifts of the Spirit, available and given to all. “I love my Jesus”.
