Galatians 3:1-5 (NLT)
Oh, foolish Galatians! Who has cast an evil spell on you? For the meaning of Jesus Christ’s death was made as clear to you as if you had seen a picture of his death on the cross. 2 Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the Holy Spirit by obeying the law of Moses? Of course not! You received the Spirit because you believed the message you heard about Christ. 3 How foolish can you be? After starting your Christian lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort? 4 Have you experienced so much for nothing? Surely it was not in vain, was it? 5 I ask you again, does God give you the Holy Spirit and work miracles among you because you obey the law? Of course not! It is because you believe the message you heard about Christ.
Don’t you think this rebuke is relevant to many of us today? Especially the so called, Spirit-Fillers amongst us. We started off in the Spirit. We followed Spirit-led teachers, enjoyed Spirit-Filled messages and Spirit-Filled meetings, but stuff happens. Life creeps in and before we know it, we aren’t so Spirit-Led. We also turn toward the intellect of man’s preaching or being entertained, more than being moved by the Spirit. We also and this is a tough one to swallow, we begin to trust in ourselves more. Our human effort (v3) becomes elevated over what the Spirit of God can do. We graduate (in our minds) from fully needing the Holy Spirit, to being self-sufficient, to being completely competent in our abilities. We began in the Spirit (v3) but end up with human effort. Man…even as I write this, I feel the weeping of the Spirit. The Joy of a Spirit-Filled Life is supposed to be one that marvels and revels at all the Spirit does in and through us. Our reliance then becomes more on Him and the wonder of His workings in and around us than on how great and wonderful we are. “Forgive us Holy Spirit, for trusting more in US than in YOU. Help us to move away from US and back into YOU.”
